Map Projections

I selected Greenland as the country to use for this project because of its location on Earth. Greenland, being far north, shows very clearly the different distortion that can occur when viewing it on different projection. I created these projection by using the website http://projections.mgis.psu.edu/. I plugged in the North, South, East and West coordinated that gave me a complete and close up view of Greenland on each of the three projections I decided to use. Subsequently I screenshot the page and then cropped the section of the map I needed. I used the Robinson, Mercator and Lambert Conformal Conic projections. In each of them Greenland differs in shape drastically. In the Robinson projection, the northern half of Greenland appears to be much wider when compared to the Mercator or the Lambert Conformal Conic's northern half. Instead the Mercator projection and the Lambert Conformal Conic projection appear longer from North to South when compared to the Robinson. The Robinson Projection appears somewhat smushed. Because the Mercator map, despite its distortions, is not displayed from an angle, I would use it for map directions because roads do not appear with much distances or shape distortion. The Robinson Projection, having fairly evident distortion towards the poles, I would definitely not use to represent distances in Greenland. The Lambert Conformal Conic projection I would not choose to represent the whole world because it cuts off many southern parts. Instead to represent the world I would choose either the Robinson or Mercator projections because, despite their distortions, they both contain the entire world. Site and situation have precise definitions in geography. Site is defined as the accumulation of physical characteristics of a place. Situation is defined as the location of a place relative to other places. Greenland has a polar climate which causes it to have little vegetation. Its subarctic climate prevents it from having a large agricultural economy. In fact, most of the produce is imported. In addition it surrounded by two different oceans: the Atlantic and Arctic. The fact that it is an island contributes to the large fishing industry found in Greenland. Seeing that Greenland is very far north compare to the rest of the world it lacks the advantages of being in a central position. No headquarters of major companies are found there because it does not offer a centralized location that is easy and quick to reach.
